DOI Minister says safety work underway

"Passenger services on the Snaefell Mountain Railway aren't likely to run again this year.

The Department of Infrastructure announced the closure of the service yesterday (25 Sep), highlighting the challenges of operating the heritage transport to modern safety standards.

A comprehensive review into the tramway was undertaken after an incident on 4 August when a tram suffered brake failure, rolling down Snaefell summit.

Infrastructure officials say many issues have arisen in trying to ensure the service is safe, and dealing with these was more important than day-to-day management.

Speaking on Mandate this morning (Tues) Infrastructure Minister Ray Harmer says whilst work into the safe running of the system will continue, it's unlikely the snaefell service will be running again before 2018."
