Isle of Man Railways has published new books about the steam railway and the horse trams.

They are two new editions in its Travellers’ Companion series that were researched and written by stationmaster Grant Taylor.

The Isle of Man Railway Travellers’ Companion is an updated version of his 2009 book, charting the history of the Island’s steam trains from the registration of the Isle of Man Railway Company in 1870. It details the 15½ mile journey from Douglas to Port Erin and contains up to date fleet information on all its steam locomotives and rolling stock.

The souvenir guide of the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway is a brand new history of the iconic trams that will celebrate their 140th anniversary in August.

Packed with photographs from the earliest days of the Island’s horse-drawn trams, the book will serve as a souvenir guide for visitors, residents and enthusiasts. Isle of Man Railways wishes to acknowledge and thank the many contributors who provided photographs for the book including David Lloyd-Jones, Manx National Heritage’s iMuseum, Margaret Dodd, Sam Alder, the Friends of Douglas Bay Horse Tramway Collection, Douglas Borough Council, the Balthane Collection, the Sunnycroft Collection and Isle of Man Newspapers.

Both books are available priced £5 each from main railway stations and the Welcome Centre in Douglas Sea Terminal. Additionally the horse tram book can be purchased from Derby Castle terminus.

Signed copies of both books are available from Douglas Railway Station ticket office, where the author is regularly on duty.
