The current journal of the Tramway and Light Railway Society features reference to the MERS campaign to save the Horse Tramway. In an editorial it issues a grim warning to readers:
"One message is clear; if you want to ride an original, historic horse tram, get to the Isle of Man this year because next year may be too late…"
The warning comes just days before Tynwald, the Island's parliament, is set to vote on whether it will support the operation of the Horse Tramway after the end of the current season. It also follows the decision by the Department of Infrastructure to recommend truncation of the line, and the likely loss of the historic Queen's Promenade stables, tram depot and what it deems horse trams which are 'surplus' to requirements.
The MER Society urges those who care about the Horse Trams and the Island's tourist industry, to contact their MHK before the 19th July sitting - urging retention of the Horse Tramway in full.
