"The Winter of Discontent". For several months from the start of 1996, the MER's southern terminus became feeder post 17 whilst work was underway to relay Prince's Motors crossing over the main Laxey/Ramsey road. The terminus was marked only by the positioning of a Police “No Waiting" cone. Cars 5 & 7 were isolated on the Northern section with 7 being employed by the Per Way gang. 5 was employed almost exclusively on what amounted to the service, running three rounds trips from Ramsey, Monday to Friday. Car 5 waits out time at Feeder Post 17, its trolley wheel positioned inches from the end of the energised section of overhead, that beyond the section gap was dead. (Photo: MERS Collection)
Passengers using the service were required to negotiate a hazardous path along the ballast and torn up rails to reach the roadway. Following complaints, an attempt to provide some kind of path was less successful than had been hoped. Here, hapless passengers (including one carrying a young child) trample over the ballast towards the roadway. (Photo: MERS Collection)
