Looking not unlike a very well-known Edwardian postcard view, this spectacular photograph of Ballure Bridge was taken during the summer of 2018. The Manx Electric Railway, particularly its northern section between Laxey and Ramsey has benefited from long overdue multi-million pound investment over the last decade or so, with major renewals of drainage, permanent way, overhead line and sub-station equipment. It is widely acknowledged that the tramway is currently in the best condition than any time since the line through to Ramsey first opened in 1899. Ballure Bridge itself underwent a £1.2 million major refurbishment during the winter of 2014/15, which included the replacement of decking, metal sections, several hundred rivets, prior to being grit blasted and painted with a high integrity marine standard coating. This essential work was vital in ensuring that the MER continues to serve Ramsey, the economic importance of the trams to the Island’s largest town cannot be overestimated. (Photo: Andrew Overton)
