The Friends of Flaybrick is a voluntary group who foster interest in the Flaybrick Cemetery in Birkenhead. At one time Flaybrick was the main cemetery for Birkenhead people. George F. Milnes is buried there. The friends group give guided tours of their most famous Birkonians and on the tour they sometimes include the grave of George F Milnes and nearby, remarkably, is George Starbuck. Two such important men so close for so many years at their place of work and now so close in death.
To Manx Electric Railway Society members, and other people interested in trams on the Isle of Man, the name G. F. Milnes needs little introduction, as he was the manufacturer of so many of the wonderful cars that still run on the MER. The grave of G. F. Milnes has fallen over and in need of cleaning and proper re-installation.
The Merseyside Tramway Preservation Society has agreed to act as a clearing house and garner any donations that people would like to make towards the cost of this work. The cost is quite reasonable as some of it will be carried out by volunteers. If people wish to send a donation to MTPS Ltd at 103 Grove Road, Wallasey CH45 3HG, then this would be wonderful. Include an email address so that a thank you can be given.
I hope that MERS members and visitors to its website and Facebook page think this is a worthwhile project to perpetuate such famous personalities in the tramcar construction story of our Isles.
Should any excess of funds over cost of renovation be given then this will be given to Friends of Flaybrick to perpetuate their good aims.
Thank you in anticipation.
