Petitioner's call for action

"A prominent conservationist has labelled government's current attitude towards historic buildings 'scandalous'.

Charles Guard lodged a Petition for Redress on the matter two years ago - but a recent attempt to advance it through Tynwald was rejected by members.

Government's planning department has been cut back in recent years, although the minister in charge, Geoffrey Boot, says efforts are ongoing to improve the process.

Mr Guard has identified around 275 examples of buildings in need of registration to protect them from future neglect.

He says change is needed now."
