Controversial proposals to shorten the Island's iconic horse tram service have been narrowly defeated - pending a re-vote in January. The need for a further combined vote next month on the matter came after the House of Keys and the Legislative Council were divided over the issue.
Tynwald had been asked to approve plans to redevelop the promenade and renew twin horse tram tracks in the centre of the prom - but only between Broadway and Summerhill.
Today's debate came only five months after Tynwald voted for the service to continue running the full length of Douglas Promenade, prompting some Members to suggest that their colleagues had backtracked on promises made then and at the General Election in September. Newly elected North Douglas MHK David Ashford (RIGHT) had earlier accused the Department of Infrastructure of 'chancing their arm' and 'insanity'.
He said it was 'ludicrous' to end the horse trams at the Villa Marina both from a heritage value and safety point of view and would guarantee a reduction in passenger numbers.
