SIGN THE PETITION TO SAVE THE HORSE TRAMS HERE

  • In July, Tynwald members voted to retain the full length of the Horse Tramway - rejecting proposals put forward by Minister Gawne...
  • In September, Keys candidates set out their promises to the electorate.
  • On September 22nd, Minister Gawne was rejected by his constituents...
  • On December 13th, the new house will vote on proposals by Mr Hamer to reduce the length of the Horse Tramway.
  • The proposals have not changed - the question is: Have the politicians?

Below, for the information of voters, is a summary of their views prior to the election:

"Just re-lay single track with passing places in the middle of the road. There is no need for the grandiose schemes."

"Douglas promenade needs to be resurfaced but we do not need grandiose schemes which has seen over £1 million pounds wasted on failed designs, which so far has offered no benefit to our Island."

"If they can function on a low budget their current location is fine."

"On the promenade - middle of the road – Sea Terminal to Strathallan."

"I am not happy with the “shared space” scheme that, at some considerable cost, was put forward by the Department of Infrastructure as being the only way ahead for the promenade. If we wish to keep the Victorian flavour of the promenade the scheme as envisaged by the Department would be totally out of character.

I believe that the plans for the Promenade could and should have been drawn up in-house without recourse to costly consultants.

We need to deal with the sub-structure and re-surface the road. If we are to keep the horse trams then I believe a single track, with passing places, from the Sea Terminal to the Strathallan is all that’s required."

Hon Christopher Charles THOMAS Esq MHK

"Definitely not on the walkway and ideally along the middle of the road the whole length of the promenade."

"They should be run on a single track with turning points at the end and no more than one passing point, I would like to see this at the side of the road."

"I am a big supporter of all our heritage transport - including the horse trams, but not in the manner they are currently operating. They must be run as an heritage facility and the frequency of services should be reduced, they should not be running at peak traffic times. I would reduce them to a single track with turning points at the end. I do not feel there is a need for more than one passing point. I would support a 10am-4pm seasonal service operating on a single track in the centre of the road with special events to showcase it as a unique attraction. In the longer term I do not believe that operations such as this fall into the remit of Government. There should be a concerted effort to seek a private operator or a charitable trust to continue the running of the Douglas Bay Horse Tram service."

Christopher Roy ROBERTSHAW Esq MHK

"Pretty much as proposed and agreed a few years ago - we should have got on with it then - i.e. a single track with passing places. It should run the full length of the promenade positioned on
the seaward side of the road as originally envisaged."

"I should say that I am supportive of the continued provision of the Horse Trams albeit on a single track situated to the side of the road and with passing places. I have supported the Department of Infrastructure in their efforts and that of MNH to retain this service and commend those directly involved for increasing revenues and reducing costs since they took over."

"There should be a dedicated tram corridor behind the parking between the parking and the footway. This would consist of a singleline track with a passing place."

Hon William Mackay MALARKEY Esq MHK

"Along the seaward side pavement (not walkway)."

"After my amendment in July, Tynwald agreed that we are going to keep our heritage Horse Trams the full length of the Promenade. We must not experience further delays to the refurbishment of Douglas Promenade. No more consultations and definitely no more consultants - let’s just get on with it."

Daphne Hilary Penelope CAINE MHK

"They should operate along the length of Douglas promenade once work is complete, and during reconstruction as much as possible. We need to commence work as soon as possible so it is probably best that the tracks are retained in centre of the prom."

"We apologise when welcoming tourists or business visitors for its lack of repair and progress. Reconstruction is now necessary along its entire length and work needs to commence as soon as possible, incorporating the horse tramway and maximising car parking. The Department of Infrastructure must deliver a cost-effective scheme to achieve this in a timely manner."

Martyn John PERKINS MHK

"Single track up the middle of the prom."

Glenfaba and Peel

716408.jpg?m=1480882970

Hon Geoffrey George BOOT Esq MHK

"This saga has been running for far too long. Hundreds of thousands have already been spent on consultants, planning and the scheme is no nearer fruition. I support retention of the trams along the whole of the promenade otherwise their heritage transport significance will be lost. I would favour a scheme to carry out repairs to the promenade rather than the radical scheme at present proposed, in other words basic resurfacing and tidying up."

677616.jpg?m=1480883011

Hon Ray Karl HARMER Esq MHK

"The horse trams should extend the full length of the promenade."

"If the horse trams are to stay then they should the full length of the promenade."

Julie Marie EDGE MHK

"The structural repairs to the sea wall needs to take place and retain the horse trams within a scheme of resurfacing as Government should protect their Heritage."

"We need to ring-fence our Heritage sites and retain our unique tourist attractions. Market the Island appropriately and ensure the upkeep of facilities to attract visitors to the Island. The facilities should be utilised to educate our young on the culture of the Island they should be proud to be part of."

"They are a nice part of Douglas' heritage but should not derail a cost effective improvement program for the promenade."

Lawrie Lee HOOPER MHK

"Preferably on the Promenade, but I have no strong views on this. The main issue is that the Promenade works need to be completed as soon as possible."

Hon Laurence David SKELLY MHK

"Agreed with Tynwald about retaining the full length of horse trams on the promenade."

The Hon Juan Paul WATTERSON BA FCA CMgr FCMI SHK

"Middle of the road where it doesn't require planning. Getting on with the job and sticking to the basics should be the mantra over the next five years."
