The horse trams put up for auction by Douglas Borough Council on Saturday fetched just £9,200.

The sale, announced during a time when many would be on holiday, gave just two weeks for prospective buyers to put together a bid.

As reported by the MERS, the disposal of these trams is part of a bigger plan to move the stables - whilst avoiding potential "political embarrassment". The sale of the stables was confirmed days later.

It is understood that at least two of the cars will remain on the Island.
