Track replacement work commenced on Snaefell Summit prior to the close of the 2015 operating season, services cease on Sunday 8th November. A temporary terminus was installed some 100 yards short of the normal unloading point to allow the service to continue whilst per way work got under-way. Single line working using the ‘UP’ line was in force between the Bungalow and the Summit.
Looking towards the Summit, the excavator can be seen at work through the mist.
A start had been made on relaying the 'DOWN' track, whilst new sleepers, base plates and rails are ready for installation.
A taste of the specially cast concrete paving featuring the Manx Triskelion which is to be used to surface the Summit terminus, was laid at the temporary stop to allow passengers load/unload safely from the cars.
An IoM Newspapers article which featured the new style paving can be found HERE.
Apart from the paving, it is not yet known what form the Summit terminus track layout will take or if the unique and historic single bladed point will be retained.
Services on the Manx Electric Railway will draw to a close on Sunday 8th November, with cars operating to the ‘B’ timetable on a daily basis over the next week. Six full journeys will be operated in each direction between Douglas & Ramsey along with a short working each way over the Douglas/Laxey section.
