SMR Car 3 was destroyed at around 2.30pm this afternoon (Wed 30th March) after it ran away unattended from the summit of Snaefell, derailed and rolled down the mountain-side. Thankfully, no injuries were sustained by staff or passengers.

Phil Gawne, Minister for the Department of Infrastructure said: "It's a very disappointing situation with the accident and the inevitable costs that will come about as a result. However, looking for positives, nobody was hurt in the incident which is a great relief to all.

This is the second serious derailment incident to befall Isle of Man Railways in recent times, MER Trailer 58 toppled over onto it's side having come to grief on the newly installed points at Laxey during July 2015. 58 is currently stored out of service awaiting repair before it can return to service.
